In the mid-19th century, Cabourg, in Calvados, was a simple fishing and farming village. The visionary project of a Parisian businessman, Henri Durand-Morimbau, transformed it into a highly sought-after seaside resort. The Caen-based architect he commissioned, Paul Leroux, designed the town in the shape of a Greco-Roman theater. The resort, inaugurated in 1855, quickly experienced explosive growth, fueled by the fashion for sea bathing and further boosted by the creation of the Société des Bains de Mer (Sea Bathing Society) to cater to spa-goers and holidaymakers.
Wealthy buyers and well-known figures purchased superb villas there, which can still be admired today. The Cabourg Casino, delightfully old-fashioned, retains all the charm of the 1900s. Facing the sea, the legendary Grand Hôtel, made famous by Marcel Proust who was a regular and had a room booked there between 1907 and 1914, exudes a charming, old-world French atmosphere.
Overlooking one of Normandy's most beautiful beaches, stretching for four kilometers, the Marcel Proust pedestrian promenade reveals the Belle Époque architectural world of the town. Visitors can admire the elegant houses and numerous flowerbeds. Cabourg is also a designated "Ville Fleurie" (flowering resort), doubly classified and brimming with parks and gardens. The town's floral expertise is showcased each spring during the "Garden in Bloom" weekend.
